REVIEW ~ ON THE EDGE by V.E. AVANCE

BLURB
Abigail Wilkinson is a high school senior who falls in love with bad-boy, Tommy Jackson. Tommy seemed like a great catch for the sweet and innocent Abigail, but things are not always as they seem to be. Tommy becomes possessive and controlling with each passing week of their relationship before becoming violent and demanding. To complicate matters, her brother’s friend, Jason Williamson, professes his love for her but life isn’t as simple as leaving Tommy for Jason. Decisions and circumstances leave Abby’s life on the edge of no return.

This book is about Abigail who is 18 years old. She is quite insecure about her looks and body and doesn't realize how beautiful she really is. She is very innocent and has had no experience with boys. She comes from a loving family and in the story we are also introduced to Kat her best friend and Jason her older brother's best friend.

Kat, her over confident best friend takes Abby shopping for prom dresses and it is here that Abby is approached by Tommy, a gorgeous stranger who asks Abby out on a date.

The story progresses along as a Y/A theme. Abby and Tommy have their first date and form an instant connection. The story is told by first person from Abby's point of view. It is more of a narrative, "he said then she said, he made food, she ate food" and I found it hard to connect with the story.
The main theme of this story is domestic abuse, both physical and emotional. I thought that the author did a very good job writing the abuse scenes and I did feel all the emotions the reader should feel towards Abby. I was frustrated that she put up with all that she did and all that surrounded her relationship.
This side of the story was very well handled and to the end of the story I got to find out why the author did an great job with the topic of abuse.
For me, I just didn't connect with the characters. I tried to enjoy the overall story but really struggled with it. I think it was more to do with the narrative style of writing. I think the reader misses out on a lot of the suspense and descriptive prose of the story when it is written this way.

Book 2 will be released summer 2014.
