All I was feeling was showing in the bathroom mirror on my reddened face. I was
having a hard time enjoying it, instead of being terrified. I cupped some water from the
faucet and swallowed, willing myself to get it together. I walked into the hall of the long
corridor that led back to the rooftop door and found Seth waiting for me, arms crossed
over his chest, casually leaning against the wall. I stood on the opposite wall, placing
my hands behind my back. I felt a drop of water drip from my bottom lip onto my chest
and slide into the V of my dress. I saw his eyes follow it with envy as he spokes his first
words to me.
“You are all I think about, and I come here and you look…like this,” he breathed the
words to me and I felt them on every inch of my body. I moved to go to him and he made
a small gesture that kept me where I was. He still wanted to play and I was game.
“What do you think about?”
“Your laugh, the way your voice is raspy in the morning when you wake up, the arch of
your perfect feet, the way your hair falls over your face when you’re on top of me, the
way this feels right now and every time I’m with you.”
I pulled my leg through the thigh high slit in my dress propping my heel on the wall
behind me and smiled. He cursed as he came toward me in a blur. He stopped himself
inches away, placing both hands on the side of my face against the wall.
“Temptress,” he whispered into my ear.

BOOK EXCERPT
#2
“Mom…” It was a plea, a one word apology that begged forgiveness for
all the shit I had put her through. I knew my face was a wreck and my eyes
were still bleeding salt for Seth. Seth. Another wave of pain hit me and I saw
the hard lines in her face disappear.
“Laura, what is it? What happened?”
I ran into her arms, taking her by complete surprise. She quickly rid herself
of her gloves and wrapped them around me tightly.
“Mom, it hurts. It hurts so much, I can’t breathe, Mom. I can’t breathe!”
“Laura what is it?” She pushed herself away from me, examining me for
some sort of physical injury, but with one look in my eyes realization
quickly washed over her.
“Come inside, Laura Lynn.”
I hated that name. It was as southern as it got. All of the people who thought
of Texas as the land of tumbleweeds and cowboys were total idiots. I grew
up in a town thirty minutes south of Dallas. The only cowboys we had
around were on a football team. I was a suburbanite. I felt a small level of
comfort when she called me by my pet name. Still, I hated the name.
I came clean as I paced the living room, waving my arms around as I spoke,
throwing around way too much information. I would see her take in deep
breaths as I revealed my twisted world to her. I spared her a majority of the
details that I knew would keep her up nights, but the rawness in my heart,
the desperation I felt, led me to a complete confession as I paced and cried
to her. She would chime in with a question here and there, but mostly sat in
silence, growing paler with each confession.
I finished with Seth. I saw her eyes moisten as I cried hysterically. I told her
of how he had cared for me, of how he had taught me so much, of the way
he treated me and how he tore my world apart with his goodbye. I knew I
looked like a complete lunatic to her, after almost a year without talking, but
I needed her. She was all I had.
I finally sat next to her, desperate for whatever light she could shed. “It
hurts so much, it’s like my chest is on fire. I miss him so badly already,
Mom. Please, help me! I can’t do this. I don’t understand, I haven’t known
him long enough. I was with Chris for two years and never cried once.”
I watched her weigh her words as she studied me. “Love doesn’t care if you
were there for five years or five minutes, Laura. Once your heart decides to
give itself away, time has nothing to do with it. It’s not a choice you made,
it’s a choice your heart made. You are in love with Seth.”
“I know that! How do I make this,” I held my chest with both hands, “stop?
It has to stop. I can’t think. I can’t function, Mom.” I felt myself starting to
hiccup through my tears. I couldn’t remember the last time I had cried that
hard.
I saw her tears as she held me to her. She put my head in her lap as I sobbed
out what was left in me. She held me close to her until the last tearful breath
escaped me.
“You know, Laura Lynn, our God is a jealous God. If you love something
more than him, he is bound to take it away. Very few people in this world
get a chance to spend their life with their first love. It’s a gift only a select
few get.”

At first it seems the attraction is mutual… until she runs. Bewildered and frustrated Craig wonders if he will ever see her again.

Sometimes the roads to our future are paved with many trials. Will Amber take the right path and find the silver lining to the happiness she deserves?

 Excerpt:

“Are you alright, Pingu? You have a strange look on your face.” We are walking along the seafront towards the pier. It is a beautiful late May afternoon, and the sun is shining and glittering off the ripples cascading across the water. Gentle waves ebb and flow along the shoreline where children sit with their families building fortresses, and other unrecognisable structures, out of damp sand.

I stop walking and move around to stand in front of Craig, reaching my arms around his waist and snuggling into his chest. I take a deep breath in, inhaling his now familiar earthy scent mixed with the fresh smells of the sea air. “I’m perfect. This is perfect. Thank you.”

“You are perfect. I’m glad you recognise that.” He smiles as he looks down into my eyes and wraps his own arms around me. He places a kiss on my forehead, leaving his lips attached to my skin. Why did I spend so many years wasting my life on a man that basically thought he owned me but had no interest in really being with me? I have missed out on so many days like this.

Becki was right with what she said. I’m starting to see that everything does happen for a reason. Maybe I was meant to stay with David until now so that I could be right here, right now, with Craig. He really is my Silver Lining. He gives me hope and optimism for a brighter future, despite whatever issues he has going on at the moment.

We spend the next few hours strolling around town, looking in shops, chatting about anything and everything, and just enjoying being together. When my stomach suddenly growls rather loudly, letting me – and probably everyone else in Paignton – know that it’s time to eat, we grab some Fish and Chips and sit on the pier eating them. Craig wanted to take me into some fancy restaurant, but relented when I started ranting about not being able to come to the seaside and eat fish and chips out of the paper. “It’s a British tradition,” I argued.

With our stomachs full, we kick our shoes off and take a stroll along the sand. The beach is quieter now, the falling early evening temperatures driving families back to their hotels or wherever it is they came from.

“You’re a bit of a snob, do you know that?” I say to Craig as we walk along an almost deserted area of the beach. I’m walking backward, facing him and laughing.

“Oh yeah?” Craig quirks an eyebrow. “How’s that?”

“Only snobs would be snobbish about eating fish and chips and candy floss when they come to the seaside. These are staple Seaside requirements, Mr Silver, along with making sandcastles and… this...” I flick my foot in the shallow water and splash him.

“Oh, you’re in for it now,” he growls, staring into my eyes.

Shit, this isn’t good. He has a devilish look in his eyes that makes me want to jump on him and flee at the same time. I gulp when he flinches and as quickly as I can, turn on my heels and run away from him, squealing in laughter, running as fast as I can through the soft sand.

I’m laughing and trying to catch my breath while evading Craig’s attempts to catch me. When I hit a large ditch in the sand, I stumble, giving Craig the perfect opportunity to lunge forward and grab me around the waist. The momentum from his attack causes me to lose my balance and we both crash down onto the sand.

Turning over quickly onto my back so I can swipe the sand away from my face, I look up to see Craig leaning over me. He is breathing heavy, his chest rising and falling sharply with each laboured inhale and exhale. We are both laughing uncontrollably, trying to catch our breath. My heart skips a beat looking up at him. He looks so young and carefree; a stark contrast to his usual cool, calm and controlled demeanour.

Our eyes lock onto each other and the laughter immediately ceases. We simply remain frozen in time, lost in each other’s gaze. I vaguely hear music in the distance, the song being carried along by the gentle sea breeze. The words from “What About Now” by Daughtry filter into my emotion filled haze.

“Craig, I...” I’m cut off by a pair of soft, warm lips pressing down on mine. He doesn’t try and deepen the kiss, just remains hovering over me with our lips locked.

I received an ARC in exchanged for an honest review.

Let me start by staying that I enjoyed this story.

Amber Merchant after being in a relationship with her fiancé for a couple of years finds out what a true ass he really was. David (ex-fiancé) came home one day to say he cannot get married to Amber.

Amber devastated after spending so many years with a man she thought was 'The One'  is now trying to pick up the pieces of her life and mend her broken heart. With the support from her best friend Becki, Amber is learning what it means to live again and what she was truly missing while she was with David all those years.
Amber does what any scorn women would do, she moved out and swore off men. Little did she know that she would meet a man that would find his way into her heart suddenly.

Craig Silver is a hottie. A successful businessman, a man that knows how to kick around a ball( in shorts I might add) and who has more mood swings than I do on the time of the month lol. Craig was so secretive, mysterious even. You couldn't deny that Craig's character was loving, funny, passionate and protective.
A really good story overall. I liked that Amber slowly grew out of her shell and got over a lot of her insecurities in order to be happy again. E.J. Shortall did a great job throwing in some curves ball that had me shouting” I KNEW IT!!!” with a great ending. The journey that both Craig and Amber goes through it's one that would leave you wanting more.

I would definitely recommend this book if you are looking for a book to make you feel good.
I rated this book 4 wonderful stars ****

***Excerpt***

I could hear the sound of the galloping horse way before I could see it. I knew it was Alec. No matter what I did or said to him, the man had a stubborn habit of tailing me. He was relentless. In spite of my turmoil, I couldn’t help but wonder if he was as relentless in other areas of his life as well. That focused, determined passion would be irresistible in bed. I quickly wiped my tears off my face, feeling both my cheeks were burning.
He stopped at a considerable distance when he found me and just stared at me, apparently deciding on how to proceed. Alec took his time, approaching me at a slow, cautious pace, as he would approach a small, frightened animal which would dash away at the least provocation.
“I really can’t get five minutes alone?” I grouched, looking at him through speculative eyes.
For a moment he appeared disconcerted and I felt a sad satisfaction.
“It is part of my job description,” he murmured quietly, stopping a few feet away.
I shook my head, tired of hearing the same old explanation over and over again. “Is kissing me a part of your job description too?” I demanded.
“You kissed me back,” he retorted in a calmly manner. Alec never gave anything away, none of what he was feeling. It infuriated me.
“It will never happen again. I don’t want you to touch me.” I managed.
“Oh, really? I could make you beg me to touch you,” he said simply. The smug grin he wore, displaying his perfect white teeth, was the epitome of defiance to me. In a matter of seconds he changed from calm and reasonable to imposing and defiant, faster than a chameleon could change the color of its skin. But instead of anger I could feel excitement sparking through my veins like wild fire.
I jumped to my feet and I halfway expected him to step back, but he stood his ground. “Why did you do it? What are you trying to achieve? Is this some kind of game to you?” I drew back my fist as if to strike out at him, but he caught it easily. His hands wrapped around my wrists, holding me securely. “Let go!” I cried.
“Be still,” he commanded. His voice was dark velvet, raspy with magic and sex. I stared into his eyes. I didn’t understand the sensations rioting through me. It was frightening. Alec’s jaw clenched. He made a noise—a growl—and suddenly his mouth crushed down on mine and plundered, taking me completely off guard. The kiss warmed me, his tongue tasting until I was panting, furious at myself for wanting more. I writhed against him trying to escape, but he was too strong and demanding. My struggles resulted in my breasts scrubbing across his hard chest, making my nipples feel swollen and heavy, betraying me. I stilled and he finally allowed me to breathe, but I was trapped in his arms.
Alec was breathing harshly, his eyes clashed with mine, then moved down to kiss my swollen lips one more time. I couldn’t handle it, so I jerked my face away. “I want more,” he groaned, releasing my right wrist. With gentle but firm movements he twisted my hair around his hand until I had no choice but to look at him. There was a heat in his eyes which belied the mildness and candor of his countenance. He had no right to appear so in control when my flesh was tight and achy and I needed...
Damn him! Mr. Confusing has done it again.
“Say you never want it to happen again,” he whispered a few inches away from my face, his eyes daring me.
“I...I never want it to happen again,” I replied in a peremptory whisper, ignoring the pulse of need pounding between my thighs.
“Liar...” He freed me from his grip and returned to his horse. He mounted him and then waited expectantly for me to follow him.
I was not sure why I did it, but I fulfilled his silent wish and got up on my horse, joining him. My mind, my emotions and my heart were in total disarray.
The horses quickened their pace, broke into a trot and then went into a canter side by side.
There were so many unanswered questions swirling inside my brain, but I was afraid to address them to him, afraid of what he might tell me, of what I might discover.
Images of our passionate embrace danced in front of my eyes. I shook my head, but the feeling wouldn’t go away. No matter how much I fought not to allow him to tempt me, I found it impossible to resist him. The more I tried, the more intense the longing grew, startling me. Fear twisted in my gut as I realized I was slowly but surely losing control over my own will. I forbade myself to scream in frustration or show any sign of weakness.
We reached the stables and let John take care of the horses before we started for the house.
“Kristen...” Alec addressed me by my name for the first time, a question and an apology in his tone.
A fine tremor rocked me and a tingle sprang to life in my breasts, stopping me in my tracks. I had never dreamed the sound of one man’s voice speaking my name could invoke such longing within me.
His hand gently locked around my arm and spun me around to face him. “Look...I’m sorry if I upset you today. I really am. I couldn’t—”
“Don’t. Alec...please don’t tease me. What happened today was wrong. I never should have kissed you. We don’t know each other...at all. You don’t even respect me or what I say to you. I don’t know what Mother would say. A bodyguard daring to kiss her daughter...” I blinked, trying to picture her reaction.
“I’m not afraid of her or anybody else,” he said dryly.
“Perhaps you should be.”
“I’m not. I’m my own man. But it looks like you’re afraid of her. You wouldn’t even breathe if she told you not to.”
“That’s not true.” I frowned.
“Then why do you care so much about what she may have to say in regard to us?”
“There is no ‘us’, Alec! Whatever this is, it never happened. For your sake and mine, just drop it before it ends badly.”
“Badly...as in you falling in love with the son of a mere bodyguard?”
I trembled. “I’ll never fall in love. Not with you, nor with any other man. So forget it!”
“Never say never, sweetheart.” He took one last long look at me before strolling away. I felt like I’d been run over by a steamroller.

******EXCERPT****
Ten minutes later we were pulling into my driveway. I gently shook Heidi awake. “Heidi, come on. There’s a nice warm bed upstairs we can both climb into. Wake up, honey.”
“Oh, God, bed sounds wonderful,” she said, but she said it in a way that made me think we were suddenly on opposite wave lengths.
She was sound asleep when I came out of the bathroom. I heard that deep Prosecco induced breathing, remembered the elbow she gave me the last time I’d attempted to wake her and knew there was no point in trying. I’d have to wait until morning.
“Dev, Dev, wake up. Come on, wake up.”
It was music to my ears as she gently shook me awake, no doubt unable to control her passion and wait any longer. My patience was finally paying off and this was going to be worth it. I rolled over and focused on Heidi sitting on the edge of my bed. She appeared to have showered and was completely dressed. In fact, she’d already pulled on her winter coat.
“What time is it? What the…”
“Come on, get dressed, you have to drive me back to Bunnies so I can get my car. I’ve got a client coming in at nine this morning and I have to go home and change.”
“Could we just take a few minutes here and…”
“No, come on, I mean it. Besides, I’ve already showered. I gotta get going,” she said and stood up.
I lay in bed for half a second, thinking ‘This can’t be happening. I don’t believe it.’
“Dev, come on, I told you I’m not kidding, get going,” she said. She checked herself briefly in the mirror before she walked out of my bedroom. She called again as she headed downstairs. “Dev.”
Heidi was the first one to finally speak as we drove to her car. “Oh, God, you big baby, will you please quit pouting. I’ll make it up to you,” she said. We were just a minute or two away from the parking lot at Bunnies. Heidi was brushing on makeup using the mirror hanging from the back of my passenger seat visor.
“Sure, not a problem. I mean, I interrupted my night. I stopped working. I drove down to Bunnies. I gave all your girlfriends a ride home. My ears are still hurting from the noise level in the car.” I shot her a glance.
“Maybe if the heat had come on we wouldn’t have had to talk so loud. God, everyone was frozen half to death. We had to talk just to stay warm.”
“Hey, you called me. Like I said, I was working.”
“Sure you were,” she said and just let that hang there for a couple of blocks.

**Excerpt**

Sensing a presence, Julian swung around and looked up. In the shadows on a rooftop, a figure stood alone, so still he wondered for a brief moment if he saw anyone at all. He was about to turn when it moved. The darkness surrounding h
im lightened at the sight of the brightness from the eyes of one of his own kind. A vampire! Neither said a word, but Julian discerned the shape of a female body hidden behind a long coat with a hood. Those bright eyes were something he’d never seen before, just as he’d never seen a female vampire. Yet, the female perched on the roof watching him had a set of shining eyes, and her stance seemed almost lethal, as if she was poised, ready to strike. He couldn’t deny what he saw, even if it was unbelievable. About to speak, a scream of pleasure from further down the alley distracted him. He peeled his gaze away from the figure on the roof and glanced into the dark at two lovers. Taking in the scent of their pleasure, he wished it was his. When he glanced back up, the woman was gone. Searching the roof peaks to find her, he saw nothing. Curious as to not only what she was, but why she was there, Julian did what any other hunter would do. After he put himself back in his jeans, he found an old fire ladder and climbed it. Up on the roof, he saw all the dark alleys, people, everything, but not the one thing he sought. Off in the distance he caught sight of something black disappearing over another roof. Turning, wind picking up his trench coat, Julian went in the direction of his quarry. He ran on top of the slippery roofs, jumping over old smokestacks shooting hot steam. Although he was only four houses behind her, she was so fast he couldn’t seem to catch up as quickly as he should. When close enough, he lunged at her, wrapping both arms around her legs, taking them both down. He thought he had the upper hand, but she shocked the shit out of him by turning her body and kicking him in the face with unbelievable strength, more than any vampire should have, breaking his hold on her. He sprang back up to his feet, only to have her sweep his legs, knocking him down once more. Staying down, one leg bent ready to move if he needed to, Julian watched her slowly stand up. The hood covered her hair and most of her face, and dark sunglasses now covered those shiny eyes of hers. But he didn’t need to see her eyes to know she glared down at him. He could feel it. Julian lunged, grabbing the front of her coat. She hit his hand away and swung her body around, backhanding him hard in the face. “And here I was going to be nice,” he said. She snorted loudly, and a very small grin tugged at the corner of her mouth. Her fists flying, she went at him. Blocking the blows took all of his training and most of his strength to stay on the roof and not slide off. She caught him with painful hits on the arms. He blocked a strike to his head with both of his arms. She kicked him in the gut, knocking the air right out of his lungs, dropping him to his knees again. “I’m almost impressed,” she said, her voice sounding detached. “Almost—but not quite.” She turned her back on him and ran to the next house. Skidding to a stop at the edge of the roof, she turned once more toward him. Julian held his gut, trying to breathe without pain and not get sick. He stood up just as she jumped up in the air, did a back flip with her legs stretched out as far as they would go, and disappeared. By the time he reached the edge, there was no sign of her up or down the dark alley. She was gone. “Shit,” he mumbled, rubbing his stomach.

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT~SCOTT HILDRETH

MEET THE AUTHOR

I have somewhat of an old school approach to life. I enjoy listening to music, riding motorcycles, talking to people, reading, and writing. I do not watch television or drink alcohol. The majority of my time is spend researching materials or interviewing people regarding what I am writing about. My preference is writing a story that makes an impact on the reader. An impact that causes them to sit and think when they are finished with the book. To have someone finish a book and say, "Great book..." is fantastic. To have someone finish a book and say, "This book made such an impact on me that I immediately read it again, it changed my life.." is what I strive for. My novel, Broken People, is just that book.
I will never forget the first time I actually felt as if I had helped someone resolve an issue in their life. I was in middle school. It started then, and has continued throughout my entire life. I have always made myself available to talk to people and resolve (or attempt to resolve) issues that they struggle with.
Having an exceptional ability to communicate has always been a gift of mine, and I have enjoyed doing so. Telling stories has always been second nature to me. Writing has been a passion of mine since I was a child. I have written poetry, romance, self-help, addiction, alcoholism, codependency, technical, and satire. There isn't a genre or a topic that I feel more comfortable with. I enjoy writing about whatever it is that I feel passionate about at the time.
Being open-minded and often seeing abusive relationships unfold, I have always been passionate about abuse, or the prevention of it. My main focus has always been people that are incapable of helping themselves, primarily women, children, and the elderly. I have talked to hundreds of women that were in abusive relationships, and assisted many of them in removing themselves from these relationships.
I try to focus in my writings to develop a story that makes people stop and think. To look at a subject or subjects from a different point of view. If I am able to get my point across, and make the subject entertaining to the reader, I feel that I have met my objective. I feel that I have tremendous depth as a person, and have had some great experiences in my life. To date, what life has offered me has been nothing short of spectacular. My opinions, point of views, and perspectives on matters are just that; an opinion. There isn't necessarily a right or wrong in what I write, but more of a belief. I always believe in what I am writing, and I further believe that the reader may benefit from viewing it from the written perspective.
I hope that you enjoy reading what I have written as much as I enjoy writing it. Nothing gives me greater satisfaction than knowing a reader enjoyed something I have written. Considering that, please take time to leave a book review if you have read something I have written.
